Best Spots in Waco—By Some Local Wacoans

Waco

So, You're Coming to Waco?

Waco’s on a lot of people’s radar these days—and not just because of Magnolia. Our little city has a way of surprising people with hidden gems, local flavor, and views you can’t find anywhere else. We’ve put together a list of our go-to spots, from the must-sees to the off-the-beaten-path favorites we send our friends to when they’re in town.

Cameron Park

Address: Multiple entrances; main access via 2601 N University Parks Dr, Waco, TX 76708

Website: waco-texas.com/cms-parksandrecreation/page.aspx?id=310

One of the largest municipal parks in Texas, Cameron Park is where Waco breathes. You’ll find miles of hiking and biking trails, scenic overlooks of the Brazos River, and plenty of picnic spots. Jacob’s Ladder is a local rite of passage—your legs might not thank you, but the views will. It’s also home to world-class disc golf courses and some of the best mountain bike trails in Texas, drawing enthusiasts from across the country.

One Day Bar

Address: 618 Columbus Ave, Waco, TX 76701

Website: onedaywaco.com

One Day is a vibe—tucked right under the Sidekick office (so yes, we’re a little partial). Creative cocktails, great coffee during the day, and the kind of lighting and music that makes you want to linger a little too long.

Neighborhood Bakery

Address: 1625 N Valley Mills Dr, Waco, TX 76710

Website: neighborhoodbaker.com

Known for their perfectly flaky croscounts and true bakery feel, Neighborhood Bakery is one of those places that makes you slow down and enjoy the details. They’ve been expanding their menu into lunch and dinner, and weekend brunch is top notch. Just check their current menu and hours before you go—they change it up and sometimes keep odd hours.

Ranchito on Waco Drive

Address: 2310 W Waco Dr, Waco, TX 76707

Website: N/A

Ranchito is a Sidekick favorite—we take every new employee here on their first day. The mini tacos pastor are the fan favorite (put the green sauce on them if you like spicy). No frills, all flavor, and a place you’ll come back to over and over.

Magnolia Silos

Address: 601 Webster Ave, Waco, TX 76706

Website: magnolia.com/silos

Of course we couldn’t not include the Magnolia Silos. Even if you’re not a Fixer Upper fan, they’re a great place to stroll, grab a cupcake, and enjoy the food trucks. Our go-to is Club Sandwich (they don’t serve sandwiches, but the street food and rotating menu are worth the hype). Weekdays are quieter, and the lawn is perfect for hanging out between shops.

Balcones Distilling

Address: 225 S 11th St, Waco, TX 76701

Website: balconesdistilling.com

You can take a distillery tour, or just grab a drink in their tasting room and browse bottles you can’t get anywhere else—small batch specials, rare releases, and all the standards that made them famous.

Opal’s Oysters

Address: 228 S 8th St, Waco, TX 76701

Website: opalsoysterswaco.com

The vibe at Opal’s is off the charts. Walk in and you’ll feel like you’ve been transported somewhere far away. Their menu is full of fresh Gulf oysters, but also plenty of non-seafood dishes and incredible craft cocktails. The outdoor patio is a whole mood, especially on a warm evening. Be sure to grab a reservation before you're in town.

Helberg Barbecue

Address: 8532 N Hwy 6, Woodway, TX 76712

Website: helbergbarbecue.com

Texas Monthly named Helberg to its Top 50 BBQ Joints in Texas list, and one bite of their brisket will tell you why. They do everything the old-school way—low and slow—with incredible ribs, sausage, and house-made sides.

Waco Downtown Farmers Market

Address: 500 N Mary Ave, Waco, TX 76704 (near Elm Ave)

Website: wacodowntownfarmersmarket.org

The market recently moved over near Elm Avenue, and it’s better than ever. Every Saturday morning, you’ll find fresh produce, handmade goods, food trucks, and live music. It’s as much a community hangout as it is a place to shop.

Sendero & The Containery

Address: 201 S 2nd St, Waco, TX 76701

Website: senderoprovisions.com

We may be biased here—we built Sendero’s website—but their flagship store is a must-stop. Inside The Containery (a creative retail hub made from shipping containers), you’ll find Sendero’s adventurous outdoor gear, plus other local gems. Don’t miss Repose for home goods and Red Herring, a restaurant with standout small plates, oysters, and craft cocktails.

Fabled Bookshop & Café

Address: 215 S 4th St, Waco, TX 76701

Website: fabledbookshop.com

Fabled is an indie bookstore with serious charm. Walk through the Narnia coat closet into the children’s section (yes, it’s for you too), grab a coffee from their café, and check their events calendar—monthly author talks, book launches, and themed gatherings keep it fresh.

Final Words from Us Locals

Waco’s charm isn’t just in the big attractions—it’s in the small, everyday spots where people actually hang out. So, take your time. Walk a little further. Ask the person next to you what their favorite place is. You might just find your new go-to.
